WINNER Small Business of the Year and overall Business of the Year for 2012

The Naked Butcher

In January 2007, Gary Hine and Kirsten Janke purchased the butcher shop in Mundaring.  Gary had been previously employed at the shop over three years and recognised the potential the business had.  Gary had at this stage accrued over 30 years’ experience in managing butcher shops and supermarket meat departments throughout Australia.

Gary and Kirsten had a clear and focussed vision in implementing a product range that addressed their customer’s needs, sparked their imagination and also offered a more natural, healthy, tastier alternative to what was being offered by supermarkets and butcher shops.  They are achieving this by sourcing, where possible, premium local organic and free range meat products.  If this is not possible, they endeavour to find suitable quality product as close to their premises as possible to reduce their carbon footprint.

This is underpinned by exceptional, professional customer service and a focus on achieving their goals.  By producing over 95% of the products they sell in store, they guarantee the integrity of every product.

WINNER Micro/Home Business of the Year

TM Carpentry WA Pty Ltd

We are a small family run carpentry business living in and loving all the hills, emigrated from Kent in the UK over 3 years ago bringing our successful business of 20 years with us.  Terry has been a carpenter for over 40 years and still loves what he does with a passion.

Over the past three years we have worked very hard building up our company in all aspects of carpentry including roofing, decking, carports and kitchens.  Advertising in our local papers and shops, we have now diversified into an outdoor furniture range creating and designing pieces especially requested from our valuable clients.   They have also developed a comprehensive website promoting their products and services.

Our aim is to create a well-known, very busy, competitive and respected establishment where people feel comfortable and safe in our hands, having a friendly continuous customer service with helpful advice whenever asked for from within the community, employing many more local craftsmen and women.

WINNER President's Choice Award

Just Becoz

Just Becoz was born from an idea that sprouted during business unit undertaken by owner Lisa Barnett Taylor on business sustainability, environmental impact and community focus as part of a double degree in Arts and Business.  Being a local resident and mother of 2 boys, she looked at what was available locally and felt that it was a shame that we lived in such a wonderful area but had to shop outside for a number of essential items.  So after much research and a soft start at local markets,  Just Becoz opened on its doors on 1 December 2010 at the Stoneville Shopping complex on Richardson Road.  We promoted the opening at the local Mundaring Sunday Markets in November, as well as with flyers in multiple supportive local businesses and signage at the shop front.   It was extremely well received and supported with customer feedback indicating the price structure and selection was extremely favourable.

In early 2011, at the request of our customer base, clothing was introduced to the store.  This quickly took off and at 30 June 2012, clothing accounted for 50% of store sales.  We have expanded on the "General Store" concept and customers are pleased to be able to purchase an outfit, matching accessories and a gift for that special event all under the one roof at extremely reasonable prices.

Lisa’s vision is to monitor and cater for customer demand in a cost effective manner that delivers the best products at the best price at all times, and to provide the best customer service in the area and become the destination shopping location.
